Regret didn’t make sense to me before. I was always of the mind that life unfolds as it should, and sometimes it’s easy, and other times it hurts, and even in the heartache there is value, because we learn lessons from it that we wouldn’t have picked up otherwise.

I'm not sure I believe that anymore.

This third book of poetry is a desperate, defiant work of recovery— a talking down of a soul from the ledge, an unravelling of a heart that’s been twisted into knots by malice, mind games, and manipulation.

There is pain we go through as a natural part of the human experience—and then there is pain no human should have been able to inflict upon another, and I have no optimistic spin to put on the latter.

I know regret now: in the love I wish I could take back, people I wish had never met, paths I wish I hadn’t gone down. I would trade away every word of this book if I could have learned the brutal lessons of the last few years in a gentler way.

But I can’t turn back time, or put things back the way they were before.

All I can do is live with the after.
